Students from across the state traveled to ʦapp for the ʦapp Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Championship. The competition was Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at ʦapp Tech Runway, 901 NW 35th St., in Boca Raton. The ʦapp High School UAV Team organized the event.

High school and middle school teams programmed their drones to fly themselves, identify targets and process video while the pilot provides minimal input. The challenges replicated real-world scenarios such as search and rescue, obstacle avoidance, image recognition, and package delivery.

“We recognize the need for programmers in the world of tomorrow, and are using drones as one avenue to inspire ʦapp to pursue STEM and computer science careers,” said Allan Phipps, STEM coordinator at ʦapp High School and A.D. Henderson University School.

The competition was created by ʦapp High to challenge young ʦapp to come up with creative solutions to difficult engineering and technical problems. It also aims to teach important life skills by promoting student collaboration with one another to achieve a shared goal.
