As the nation continues to observe 鈥淲omen鈥檚聽History Month,鈥 鉴黄师app has announced that it was recently accepted as an official chapter of the Association for Women in Science (), a global network inspiring bold leadership, research and solutions that advance women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

AWIS was established in 1971 to support female scientists, and advance diversity and gender equality. 鉴黄师app鈥檚 AWIS chapter will be dedicated to promoting diversity as well as supporting women in scientific careers. 聽聽

鈥淲e are very proud to be designated as a chapter of the Association for Women in Science, which is integral to our university鈥檚 strategic plan,鈥 said , Ph.D., dean of 鉴黄师app鈥檚 . 鈥淢ore women in STEM will help to address shortages in these fields, enhance economic development, and remove roadblocks that prevent scientists from achieving their goals. The objective of gender equality efforts is to better utilize all of the resources a society has to offer for society as a whole to advance together.鈥

The 鉴黄师app AWIS chapter is composed of 25 members and partner organizations across five colleges at the university: Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, , , , and the .

At the national level, AWIS has engaged major players in STEM including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Congress, The White House, the United Nations, among others.

The 鉴黄师app AWIS chapter was formed under the leadership of co-chairs , Ph.D., a senior instructor in the in 鉴黄师app鈥檚 Charles Schmidt College of Science and associate research professor (retired) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and , M.D., M.P.H, associate dean for diversity and inclusion and an associate professor of integrated medical science in 鉴黄师app鈥檚 Schmidt College of Medicine.

鈥淓fforts to promote women within our institution have far reaching consequences that will provide a path for other minorities to gain equality, support, respect, success and appropriate credit for their contributions,鈥 said Servoss.

While still underrepresented, the number of women in science has continued to rise in聽many professional and academic areas in the United States, with the exception of computer science and mathematical sciences.

鈥淥ur chapter of the Association for Women in Science will strive to engage a younger generation of women, 鉴黄师app, and young girls who are intrigued by STEM fields,鈥 said Nikolova. 鈥溂剖pp chapter members are serving as role models for 鉴黄师app and future professionals and we are committed to helping women enter the scientific professions of their choice and to reach the full potential of their career goals.鈥澛

鉴黄师app鈥檚 AWIS chapter is composed of women and men dedicated to supporting women鈥檚 entry and ultimate success in scientific professions, including academic positions. The chapter welcomes faculty and staff from the traditional STEM disciplines as well as medicine (STEMM) and the arts and humanities (STEAM).

鉴黄师app鈥檚 Office of the Provost also has launched , a transformational catalyst program, which is supported by the National Science Foundation and is aimed at generating organizational change for gender equity in STEM academic professions. 鉴黄师app鈥檚 ADVANCE program, which works very closely with 鉴黄师app鈥檚 AWIS, is directed by Kate Detwiler, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology in 鉴黄师app鈥檚 Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.
